Make the work between people as fast as the idea behind it.

There's an intention. The moment you decide something is worth doing. There's the execution. The doing of it. And in between, there's a section where you're spending time trying to figure out how to do the thing. That section is the middle. The longer you spend there, no one is getting any value from it. Not you. Not the company. Not the person on the other end.
You've been there. You decided to refinance, and the closing is three months out. The hire you said yes to starts in nine weeks. The vendor contract is in its fourth round of redlines. The specialist your doctor referred you to has a callback queue two weeks deep. The decisions took minutes. The middles took months.
The middle is where so much of work life has gone. But you’ll never see any of that on my resume or in the stories I tell me grandchildren.
I managed a band on a major label for a decade. Religion of Sports for five years. A law firm + the federal government before either of those. Different industries. Same middle. Afternoons hunting for the right version of a contract. Reconstructing what was agreed to last week because the conversation lived across three threads. Following up. Checking. Confirming. Routing. The work I was hired for happened in whatever time was left after the middle took its share.
The pain and futility of the middle is most acute right now in creator marketing. A deal between a brand saying yes and a contract getting signed takes 60 to 60 messages. A campaign with 300 is 24,000 messages before anyone makes any content. A trending moment hits Tuesday. The team wants to activate two hundred creators to ride it. By Thursday they're forty emails into the first deal. The moment is gone.
The decisions inside any of these weren't slow. The decision to work with a creator takes ten minutes. The decision on a rate takes five. We go back and forth on exclusivity rights for four weeks. Exclusivity rights matter. The decision about them doesn't need to take four weeks. The four weeks aren't being used to decide anything. They're being used to do the work of having decided.
The middle has grown increasingly and unnecessarily complex for twenty years. The volume climbed. Tools that were supposed to help just stored things. The work that was always supposed to be done by something other than a person stayed with the person, because nobody built the something else.
Work feels harder than it should because the middle got bigger. Nobody got slower.
I'm not arguing for removing the human. In fact I want to amplify the distinct elements of judgement and context that only a human can do. The human still makes the call. What I want compressed is everything around the call. The version control. The just-following-up. The manual transfer of terms from email to spreadsheet to contract template. The work that produces nothing for the campaign, the team, or the person doing it.
Nobody's intention is the deal. The deal is what stands between people and the work they want to do. The campaign, the content, the partnership. That's the goal. The purpose of work.
There's no winner inside an ever expanding middle (except hourly lawyers). Not you. Not the company. Not the person on the other end. The hours don't show up anywhere as value. The middle is a tax everyone pays so intention can eventually become execution.
Compress it and the time doesn't move somewhere else. It disappears. The gap between deciding and doing closes. Then the work begins.
